Job Summary:   

The Maintenance Manager, in cooperation with shift supervisors, leads a team of maintenance technicians in the Battle Creek plant and nearby distribution center to ensure all equipment remains operational and directs proactive work on equipment. They also will oversee and manage all training needs for the team.

  Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

 ·         The Manager will be responsible for all direction and coaching of skilled-trades maintenance crews in a production environment. This includes electrical and mechanical servicing and efficient maintenance of production machinery and equipment, physical plant, utilities and grounds in accordance with state and federal regulations and company policy and procedures. 

·         Responsible for enforcing all applicable safety and loss management requirements, including the Safety and Risk Management policies, and OSHA regulations are followed. 

·          Execute and provide input to the weekly maintenance planning process to ensure full economical utilization, availability of equipment requiring work, and availability of equipment and parts necessary for the job. 

·          Execute and provide input to the preventive and predictive maintenance program and equipment audits when possible within the guidelines of productions scheduling and manpower. Make recommendations concerning the priorities for weekends and outage work. 

·          Provide leadership and supervise the activities of the maintenance team to ensure efficient scheduling of workload and proper maintenance of equipment, buildings and infrastructure.

·          Provide direct feedback and coaching to employees concerning the performance of job responsibilities. 

·          Recommend, plan and implement equipment initiatives to improve production efficiency and / or product quality. 

·          Lead and execute capital project installation according to plan and specifications. 

·          Manage assigned building maintenance requirements, deliver acceptable maintenance KPI such as PM completion compliance, Planned work vs. break in work, routine work (PM hours ) vs. total hours and planned work compliance

·         Communicate with and collaborate with all departments to ensure that production operations remain fully functional and equipment is proactively maintained.

·         Strong knowledge and understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, belt systems, motors, pumps, and other industrial machine components.

·         Ability to perform and supervise mechanical work, valve replacement, conveyor bearing and chain replacement, motor/gearbox replacement, lubrication systems.

·         Must possess the skills/knowledge of an Industrial Electrician to read and comprehend electrical schematics to install, troubleshoot, conduct preventative maintenance and perform repairs to facilities and production equipment to 480 Volts, 3-Phase.

·         Ability to troubleshoot and re-wire high speed equipment such as AC/DC motors, VFDs, PLCs, PLC I/O modules and servo motors.

·         Working knowledge of electrical controls systems, safety circuits, and automation components such as inductive proximity sensors, photoeye sensors, and mechanical limit switches.

·         Experience with boiler systems and ammonia refrigeration a plus.

·         Promotion of safety awareness and participation in safety meetings. Knowledge of safety policies and procedures is required (e.g. lock out / tag out, high voltage electrical).

·         Working knowledge of and the ability to use hand and power tools

·         Provide individual performance evaluations with primary focus being recognition and identification of improvement/growth opportunities.

·         Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and product quality.

·         Maintain facilities to meet GMP and SQF standards. Ensures that good housekeeping policies and sanitation practices are followed.

·         Lead and support continuous development of SOP documentation and use.

·         Regularly inspects work areas and equipment to ensure OSHA standards are met.

·         Experience in the food industry, is required.

·         Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Physical Requirements: 

  • Education: BS / BA is strongly preferred (Engineering or similar technical discipline preferred)
  • Experience: Must have food experience in a leadership role.
  • Must have 7-10 years of maintenance experience and a minimum of 5 years of supervisor experience. 
  • OSHA Certification preferred
  • Language/Communication: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to lead and communicate with a multi-cultural and multi-lingual personnel team.
  • Reasoning: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a comfort level with Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Inventory software and Manufacturing software, as well as general Email and Internet research capabilities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull product weighing up to fifty pounds out of confined spaces and occasionally having to lift product overhead.
  • Ability to stand, kneel climb ladders and other physical requirements as needed.
  • Must be able to pass a post-offer hair drug test, alcohol screening, and physical exam.
