Job Description:

These positions are located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. The Medical Technician performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. [ "***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The major duties include but are not limited to: Performs phlebotomy on patients; ensures correct tubes, amounts, and labeling of specimen; Performs routine and specialized tests and examinations using the techniques of medical laboratory practices in chemistry (including toxicology), hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology, mycology, parasitology, serology and immunochemistry. Such procedures include requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; Performs complex lab procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles; Performs testing procedures on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques; Accessions the specimens using laboratory computer systems; processes specimens and selects appropriate procedure based on knowledge of the type of specimen, patient information, and resources available in the laboratory; Controls physical conditions and responds to time factors to ensure that the physiological state of the specimen is maintained; Performs tests that are new and involve very fine distinctions, includes extremely delicate and exacting steps using instrumentation that is elaborate and complex; Prepares reagents, assembles equipment and verifies correct instrument operation; maintains the validity of assay system by testing reagents; evaluates the validity of data in relation to the test system assay procedures; Monitors quality control systems daily. Recommends new or revised methods of collecting and evaluating quality control data; Identifies discrepancies, solves problems, and presents solutions; Answers inquiries (e.g., test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, specific factors that influence test results, etc.); and Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 2:30pm to 11:00pm, Rotating weekends and holidays. Schedule may change based on the needs of the Medical Center.
