This is an open continuous announcement. We accept applications for this occupation on an ongoing basis; qualified applicants will be considered as vacancies become available. This announcement is for Registered Nurses only. Licensed Practical Nurses should not apply to this announcement. For further information, visit: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-visitus-forrecog.html.The Mental Health Staff Nurse is a Professional Nurse with broad-based clinical knowledge enabling him/her to effectively implement health promotion, illness prevention, and care management responsibilities for adult or older adult psychiatric patients requiring skilled nursing interventions in an inpatient setting.

Mental Health staff nurses typically provide care to patients with complex, acute or chronic psychiatric conditions, patients with cognitive impairments and/or patients in acute withdrawal from substance abuse . He/she is knowledgeable about the commitment process and all other legal issues surrounding care of the committed patient including elopement and the various levels of ground searches.

The Mental Health staff nurse is able to assess for the presence of suicidal and homicidal ideation and provide the appropriate level of observation.The Mental Health staff nurse utilizes the nursing process when assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting nursing care provided.

Performs basic physical, psychological and social assessments. Demonstrates a beginning ability to identify and prioritize care needs.

Documents outcomes related to identified patient needs. Evaluates the patient's response to nursing interventions revising the care plan with assistance as necessary

Implements the plan of care. Demonstrates accountability for management of patient assignment.

Demonstrates knowledge and/or required safety skills in area of assignment, to include: emergency preparedness, hazardous materials, fire plan, equipment failure emergency plan and utility outage response procedures.

Documents nursing process including patient/family/significant other education and discharge planning in an accurate and timely manner (per policy).

Administers and documents medications and treatments according to policy (as assigned).

Implements nursing and physician orders in a timely and accurate manner.

Provides safe care and conserves resources effectively.

Conforms to professional standards of practice and complies with patient care standards.

Work Schedule: Evenings, nights, and weekends. Evening shift: 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. or night shift 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Weekend/Holiday day shift varies. Schedule may vary as deemed necessary to meet the needs of the Veterans and the Medical Center.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.


    Preferred Experience: Mental Health experience.

    Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.


    • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. PAY RANGE $53,277 TO 54,875.00
    • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. PAY RANGE $56,473.00 TO $58,071.00
    • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. PAY RANGE $59,669.00 TO $70,855.00
    • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. PAY RANGE $63,097.00 TO 83,909
    • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree. PAY RANGE $68,777.00 to $91,470.00


      Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing, lifting, moving, and transporting patients. Transferring patients and objects is required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or procedures.

      The incumbent may be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. In the patient clinical areas, hazards include risk of exposure to communicable diseases and risk of physical injury associated with the patient losing control. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
