The Extended Care Service Community Living Center Staff Nurse is a Professional Nurse with broad-based clinical knowledge enabling him/her to effectively implement health promotion, disease prevention, and management for adult or older adult residents requiring skilled Nursing interventions in a long term care setting. CLC Staff Nurses care for residents with medical and/or psychiatric conditions, residents with cognitive impairments, and residents who are terminally ill. The CLC Staff Nurse utilizes the Nursing process when assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting Nursing care provided. He/she works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team when planning and providing care to residents and their families. The Staff Nurse functions independently as a Charge Nurse on the residents' neighborhood, organizing and delegating care activities to other RNs, LPNs, and NAs and providing feedback to the Nurse Manager regarding the practice of others in order to improve care. He/she may either direct the care of other Staff members or provide direct resident care depending on the needs of the neighborhood. The CLC Staff Nurse participates in Quality Improvement activities in the CLC and/or Medical Center with the objective of improving resident care outcomes. He/she takes an active role in identifying his/her own educational needs and is expected to continually update and learn new clinical skills. The CLC Staff Nurse participates in Community Living Center, Extended Care Service, and Medical Center Committees, Work Groups, or Task Forces based on the RN's interests and the needs of the Service.

The primary tours options:

Staff RNs in the CLC work 80 hours during each 2 week pay period and on 12.5 hour compressed work tours-either days (0700 to 1930) or nights (1900-0730) with rotation to the opposite tour as needed to provide coverage. The RN will work six 12.5 hour tours and one 8.0 or 8.5 hour tour during each pay period (80 hours).

Candidates preferring to work 8.0 or 8.5 hour evening (1530 to midnight) or night (midnight to 0800) tours with rotation or a 12.5 hour (1130-midnight) compressed work tour can discuss their preferences and available options at interview.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.


    Preferred Experience:

    Preferred experience for the Lighthouse Neighborhood:

    The RN in this position will be caring for Veterans admitted for short stays for rehabilitation, hospice care, or palliative care.

    We would also prefer the RN joining this team to have:



    • Experience as a Registered Nurse in a long term care setting, in an acute care medical/surgical setting, with a home hospice agency, or in a free standing inpatient hospice setting.
    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.


      Preferred Experience for the Autumn Days Neighborhood:

      The RN in this position will be providing care to cognitively impaired older adults on a unit focused on the care of persons with dementia.

      We would prefer the RN joining this team to have:



      • Experience as a Registered Nurse in a long term care setting or acute care medical/surgical setting and preferably working with cognitively impaired older adults.
      • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
      • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
      • Passion about providing exceptional care to cognitively impaired Veterans.


        Preferred Experience for the Safe Harbor Neighborhood:

        The RN in this position will be providing care to older adults in need of skilled nursing care in a long term care setting.

        We would prefer the RN joining this team have:



        • Experience as a Registered Nurse in a long term care setting or acute care medical/surgical setting.
        • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
        • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
        • Passion about providing exceptional care to older adults in a long term care setting.


          Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:


          • Nurse I Level I (53,277-54,875)- An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
          • Nurse I Level II (56,473-58,071) - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
          • Nurse I Level III (59,669-72,453) - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
          • Nurse II (63,097-83,909) - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
          • Nurse III (68,777-91,470) - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.


            Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

            Physical Requirements: Registered Nurse Functional Requirements: Heavy Lifting 50 lbs and over (intermittently); Carrying up to 45 lbs (intermittently); Repeated bending; Straight Pulling up to 45 lbs (intermittently); Straight Pushing up to 45 lbs (intermittently); Stooping (intermittently); Squatting (intermittently); Kneeling (occasionally); Use of both arms; Use of both hands; Use of fingers; Overhead work, both arms (intermittently); Prolonged walking (up to 4 hours/day); Prolonged standing (up to 4 hours/day); Sitting (up to 2 hours/day); Far Vision - correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Near Vision - correctable to read newsprint at 13-16 inches; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing - ability to hear and understand the spoken voice from a distance of 8 feet. Ability to effectively utilize a stethoscope and distinguish breath and heart, and bowel sounds; Emotional and mental stability - ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the position and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
